Mike Huckabee: “What is the FairTax?”

The following is the latest newsletter from the Vertical Politics Institute:

Yesterday, I emailed you about the Fair Tax to explain why I think the Fair Tax is an important piece to America’s economic future.

I also included a link to an eight minute video where I discuss my support of the Fair Tax.

Today, I would like to explain in greater detail what the Fair Tax is and offer you three ways you can help the Vertical Politics Institute (VPI) start a broader discussion about tax reform in this country. A discussion which I believe will lead America to conclude the Fair Tax is the best path forward.

First, what is the Fair Tax?

The Fair Tax Plan is a thoroughly researched national tax system carefully designed to replace all income and payroll taxes with a simple, transparent and fair national retail sales tax. The Fair Tax will eliminate all federal income and payroll taxes. It will do away with all personal federal, corporate federal, gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, self-employment taxes.

The Fair Tax will replace the Internal Revenue Code with a progressive consumption tax. When consumption is taxed instead of citizen’s earnings, savings and investments, the economy functions much better because taxes are levied on what we take out of the economy as consumers instead of what we put into the economy as producers.

The Fair Tax eliminates all federal taxes on the poor and gives the middle class a dramatic tax break. Each American citizen will receive a monthly prebate that will reimburse us for taxes on purchases up to the poverty line, so that we’re not taxed on basic goods and necessities. Instead, Americans will only be taxed on what we decide to buy, not what we happen to earn. We won’t be taxed on what we choose to save or the interest those savings earn. And, the tax will apply only to new goods, so we can reduce our taxes further by buying a used car or computer.

The Fair Tax also isn’t intended to raise any more or less money for the federal government to spend – it is revenue neutral. However, it doe broaden the taxpayer base by taxing the $1.5 trillion a year annual underground economy, eliminating unfair tax loopholes for the wealthy and by making taxpayers of 12 million illegals as consumers. Under the Fair Tax nothing is withheld by the government from paychecks, the IRS is abolished and April 15th becomes just another spring day!

The Fair Tax is progressive, but it doesn’t punish the American people for their success as does the current system. Nor does it punish the old fashioned virtues of hard work and thrift. Instead it rewards and encourages them. Expert analysis of the Fair Tax have shown that it lowers the lifetime tax burden of all of us-single or married; working or retired; rich, poor, or middle class.

Furthermore, many experts believe the Fair Tax can help solve the current financial meltdown by:

1. Increasing take home pay which will allow distressed homeowners to stay in their homes and satisfy mortgage obligations.

2. Attracting an estimated $12-15 trillion of foreign investment into our economy and

3. Greatly benefiting “Made in America” products resulting in rapid job growth.

And just as importantly, all of these effects do not require huge taxpayer investments.

In the coming months we will read about the Obama administration’s massive expansion of government. An expansion fueled by deficit spending and more than likely higher tax burdens on American families. That is exactly the wrong reaction to the problems we face.

To counter this, I hope you will join me in promoting the Fair Tax. Here are three ways to help today:

1. Forward this email and yesterday’s email to your friends and family. If they are interested in what they read, encourage them to sign up for email updates from the Vertical Politics Institute here. If you are a blogger, you have my permission to reprint both emails on your blog. Encourage your readers to spread the word and sign up for email updates at www.verticalpoliticsinstitute.com.

2. If you can afford to, please become a sponsoring or sustaining member of the Vertical Politics Institute with your contribution of $25 or $100 today. You can learn more about the benefits of membership here.

3. Check back next week at www.verticalpoliticsinstitute.com  to sign up as a volunteer in our efforts to promote the Fair Tax.

I hope you are finding these emails informative. Next week I plan on switching gears completely to discuss the environment and why it is important for conservatives.

With deep gratitude,

Mike Huckabee

P.S. You can help support the Fair Tax by promoting the Fair Tax to friends and family, contributing financially to the Vertical Politics Institute (learn about our membership opportunities here) and by signing up to be a volunteer very soon.

Mike Huckabee: “Why the FairTax?”

The following is yesterday’s newsletter from the Vertical Politics Institute:

I support the Fair Tax and believe enacting the Fair Tax would transform our sluggish economy.

First, if you will read the chapter in my book “Do the Right Thing” about the Fair Tax, you’ll not only have a clear understanding of what it is but how I ended up becoming an unflinching supporter and how the Fair Tax was developed.

It was not created by Congressman Linder or Neal Boortz, though they did co-author two wonderful books explaining it which I can recommend (after MY book, of course!)

It was the result of some prominent business leaders from several states meeting to discuss how to change what they saw as a very punitive tax system that was stifling our economy and making it increasingly more difficult to succeed in a global market.

These guys put up their own personal money (no government grants involved) and sought after and then contracted with a team of America’s top economists, which included a “Who’s Who” of leading economic thinkers from Harvard, Boston University, Stanford, MIT, and other top schools and business economists. That team was challenged to do a thorough study and determine the optimum way for the government to receive the funding it needed to operate in a way that would most empower the citizens at all levels to prosper and not punish them. The financiers of the project all thought that the team of economists would come back to them with a flat tax on income, much like the Steve Forbes proposal of a few years ago. What they received back was in fact a flat tax, but not on income, but on consumption. Their proposal, which by design was to be revenue neutral, is the genesis of the Fair Tax. There is over $20 million of academic and practical research behind it.

The biggest obstacle to its passage is mobilizing the political will to enact the Fair Tax and it is one of the reasons why I founded the Vertical Politics Institute (VPI).

Many armchair political quarterbacks like to speculate about whether I should personally back off support of the Fair Tax, don’t bother. I won’t. I’m convinced we could begin to work out of our economic nightmare if our political leaders had the guts to do something about the Fair Tax rather than create monster debts for our children with unconstitutional bailouts for private businesses.

This email is just the beginning of a long term discussion about a very important issue.

Look for my email around this time tomorrow discussing what the Fair Tax is and how you can help.

With deep gratitude,

Mike Huckabee

PS In February of 2008, during the heat of the campaign, I was asked about the Fair Tax at the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco. This links to an eight minute video of my answering questions on the issue. More food for thought.

The FairTax Is Alive In The 111th Congress!!

US Rep John Linder (GA-7) has great FairTax news:

Friends,

I am extremely happy to tell you that HR 25, the FairTax, has been reintroduced and is alive and well in the 111th Congress.  Not only that, the FairTax has been dropped with more original co-sponsors than it has ever had.  This is an incredible accomplishment, and it has everything to do with you and the immense passion and work you have put into it.

As a citizen co-sponsor of the FairTax you have played an active role in illustrating to other Members of Congress that the FairTax is important to you and is the right step for America to once again regain her prominence.  Thank you for that.

Our citizen co-sponsor effort has become a powerful tool, as I hoped it would.  This means we need to work together to enhance and strengthen it.  Our goal in Congress is to reach 100 co-sponsors on the bill, and our goal for the citizen co-sponsors is to reach 100,000.  I truly believe that if our citizen co-sponsors can achieve that goal, then that will be the catalyst for HR 25 crossing that 100 co-sponsor threshold.  So now is the time, if you haven’t gotten a friend to join the fight, do it today by sending them to www.johnlinder.com. If you already have, thank you; now go try and find ten more.

The success of the FairTax to date has been tremendous, and it is all a result of your hard work.  It is incumbent upon all of us that we step up our efforts  to ensure that the FairTax has not yet reached its peak, but is still climbing.

Thank you again for all you do,

New Year Promises To Bring Real Change To The Vertical Politics Institute!

Not only is there news from HuckPAC today but there is news on the Vertical Politics Institute front as well!  The following is Governor Huckabee’s latest message from VPI

I thought today would be a great day to tell you that I am looking forward to the Vertical Politics Institute moving into the next phase of development.

Our goal is to make a real difference in the policy ideas of the Republican Party. Right now we are focused on building our membership ranks. If you are not signed on as a Founding Member of the Vertical Politics Institute, I urge you to consider doing so today.  We will invest your contribution wisely.

During the presidential campaign we prided ourselves in stretching every dollar effectively and the Vertical Politics Institute won’t be any different.  So please consider signing on as a Founding Member today.

Early next week I will email you about the issues we will focus on in the coming weeks and months. First out of the gate is the Fair Tax and I am eager to get your feedback.

Looking forward to a great year of working together.

With deep gratitude,

Mike Huckabee

John Oxendine – “We Need Your Help To Enact The FairTax!”

The following is the latest release from John Oxendine’s campaign.  It was sent last week and I thought I posted it here but was mistaken.  Sorry about the delay.  Do note his language.  Oxendine is going all in on the FairTax and is trying to ride Mike Huckabee’s coattails to the Governor’s Mansion in Atlanta.

Dear Fellow Fair Tax Supporter,

I stand with Congressman John Linder, Neal Boortz, and Herman Cain in support of the Fair Tax.

I am very disappointed the US Congress has not followed the outstanding leadership of Congressman Linder and passed his historic pro-family legislation.

If you honor me in 2010 by allowing me to serve as your Governor, I will invite the nation’s Governors to meet and draft a plan to implement the Fair Tax.

I stand with, and support, Governor Mike Huckabee in his national leadership on the Fair Tax.  Governor Huckabee has demonstrated true leadership and statesmanship in his principled stand on the Fair Tax.  I intend to stand with him as we continue the battle for the Fair Tax.

Like Governor Huckabee, I feel that a reasonable tax structure should be flat, fair, finite, and family friendly. The Fair Tax achieves these goals for America.

Like Governor Huckabee, I am convinced the Fair Tax will do more to revive our sagging economy than any so-called stimulus package Congress can try and sell to taxpayers.

Like Governor Huckabee, I don’t support the Fair Tax just to secure the support of a particular group of voters.  I support the Fair Tax because I am confident it will lead to a level of economic security and revival that would be unmatched by any other action on the part of our Federal government.

I need your help. I need your support – today.

I am not endorsed by the Fair Tax organization. Due to IRS laws, they cannot endorse me.

However, I endorse them.

I have had people say that if I support the Fair Tax, I will not have their political support in my campaign for Governor of Georgia.  While I certainly respect their opinion and will regret not having their support, I am and will always be solid and sincere in my support for the Fair Tax.

I am willing to lose an election, but I am not willing to stand by and allow my children to live under the failed tax policies implemented in 1913 that we still have to endure.

America needs the Fair Tax and we need it now.

I need your support to become the nation’s first sitting pro-Fair Tax governor.  Will you send my campaign a contribution before my 31 December reporting deadline?

We have all heard reports of a resolution by the National Governor’s Association opposing the Fair Tax.  If you honor me with your financial support, I will be the Governor that changes that.

I will be the Governor who campaigns for the Fair Tax and I will be proud to stand with Governor Mike Huckabee, Congressman John Linder, Neal and Herman to promote and fight for the Fair Tax.

If you agree, I need your help. Today.

Once the Georgia General Assembly goes into Session in early January, I cannot accept contributions until they conclude – typically in mid-April.

Your contribution – of any amount from $5 to $5,000 will help. It will allow me to travel the state in early 2009 hosting our Fair Tax Meet Ups.

In the next few weeks, the dates and locations will be posted at www.johnoxendine.com for my next series of statewide Fair Tax Meet Ups, but I need your financial support to make them a reality.

I am afraid my potential opponents only passively support the Fair Tax. Sure, they may not oppose it, but they are certainly not making it a central message of their campaign.

One reason is that many of their top financial supporters actually support massive federal bailouts and oppose Governor Huckabee and the Georgia Republican Congressmen in their opposition to these out of control bailouts.

Typical. Politics as usual.

I am proud to endorse the Fair Tax.  I have already traveled across Georgia and across America for the Fair Tax.

If you supported Governor Mike Huckabee and the Fair Tax in Georgia in 2008, I am your candidate for Governor of Georgia in 2010.

Please go to www.johnoxendine.com and contribute as generously as you can so that I can take our pro-Fair Tax message across Georgia.

John Oxendine 2010 – For A Conservative Georgia

Here in Georgia, our state insurance commissioner is running for Governor in 2010 to follow the two terms of  Republican Sonny Perdue (who is term limited).  The following is his latest release:

JOHN OXENDINE:  For a Conservative Georgia

Dear Fellow Conservative:

In 2010, conservatives face a serious decision. We will nominate and elect a new Governor.

That Governor will either be a proactive supporter of those traditional, conservative values you have supported or be a moderate, establishment, go along to get along candidate.

Friends, I believe in Faith, Family, and Freedom. Ronald Reagan built the greatest coalition in the history of the world based on these three principles.  He reminded us that the United States of America is a nation whose people own the government – not the other way around. This is what makes us so special among all the nations of the Earth.

Our government has no power except that granted it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government, which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed.

Our Founding Fathers separated church from state, but they did not separate God from state; they acknowledged God as the source of our rights. America was founded on the Judeo-Christian philosophy based in the Bible and the Torah. It is Judeo-Christian morality that keeps America free, defines our values and defines us as patriots. God is the foundation of America.

Together, we can bring Georgia back to its Judeo-Christian roots and to the traditional values that made Georgia great.

A John Oxendine administration will support doctrines of traditional Judeo-Christian values which protect the family, lower taxes, ensure limited government, more entrepreneurship, more private sector job creation, and a strong state defense security force.

I believe in a Republican Party that is centered in a solid conservative philosophy.  I am determined to have Georgia lead the way to stronger support for the working family, life, a Fair Tax, border integrity, and no bailouts for Wall Street.

I fear, not every candidate for Governor feels as strongly as I do on these matters.

I am sick and tired of candidates who pander to the conservatives in an election and then take positions opposite once in office. I am sick and tired of leaders who cannot pass important legislation because they are playing politics at the state Capitol. I am sick and tired of Republican candidates who are RINOS – those who take conservatives votes, but enact liberal Democrat policy for Georgia.
If you are as well, I am your candidate for Governor in 2010.

The problem for Georgia taxpayers is that we have paid the price for certain people playing politics as opposed to offering real leadership.

Consider where Georgia is after this past Legislative Session:

At the end of the Session, Georgians still have no tax cuts, are still stuck in traffic, still have no new economic development projects, and still trail other states on school test scores.  My message to Georgia taxpayers: Help is on the way and change is coming.

You have been generous to support conservative candidates with a financial contribution to their campaign.  Will you help me today for 2010?

Can I count on you for a contribution to demonstrate to the establishment in Atlanta that conservatives are going to take a stand and keep the Governor’s office for conservatives?
I need you today.  I ask you to send a contribution so that it is reflected on our year end report.

More than that, by law, I cannot accept your financial support once the General Assembly goes into Session in early January until it adjourns in the spring.  Your financial contribution will provide our campaign with the necessary resources to travel around Georgia and bring our pro-family, pro-faith, pro-freedom message in early 2009.

Please visit www.johnoxendine.com and read my Family Values Position paper and if you want a conservative Governor, consider sending my campaign a donation before the 31 December report.
You can contribute online at: www.johnoxendine.com or mail your check to:

God Bless Georgia.

At your service,

John Oxendine
I enthusiastically endorse John Oxendine for Georgia’s next Governor in 2010.  He is putting his political life on the line but not just pushing the FairTax but by making it a huge basis for his campaign.  He wants to convene limited Constitutional conventions to overturn the 16th Amendment and to enact the FairTax over the heads of Congress (via Article V of the Constitution).  Not only does John want to do that but he is already working hard to get his goal accomplished.

Mike: “Saxby Chambliss Wins!”

The following are the comments written by Governor Mike Huckabee on Saxby Chambliss’ big win in the Georgia US Senate runoff.  In fact the margin ended up being over 315,000 votes when all was said and done.  It is a stunning landslide considering how much money the Democrats poured into the state and that the last polls showed Saxby only ahead by 4% (the margin ended up being 14%):

The people of Georgia have spoken. They have recognized the tremendous job that Senator Saxby Chambliss has done in the United States Senate, and have voted to return him to the Senate. As you know, Saxby Chambliss is a strong supporter of the FairTax, and his victory tonight is a clear indication that Georgia voters support the FairTax also.

The Democrats threw every weapon at Senator Chambliss that they had, including former President Bill Clinton, and a radio ad by President elect Barack Obama. But the voters of Georgia recognized the job that Saxby has done for them in the last six years and voted this evening to keep him working on their behalf.

Saxby Chambliss’ victory means that the Democrats will not have their veto proof majority. But more important than that, Saxby’s victory means that a solid conservative returns to the Senate to fight for the conservative Republican values that are so important to all of us.

Saxby Chambliss has been a strong conservative voice since his election in 2002. He is known as a champion of our military and serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Rules Committee and is the ranking Republican member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry.

Congratulations Senator Chambliss on your victory. Thank you to the voters of Georgia. A special thank you to all the Huck PAC supporters who helped by making phone calls.

God Bless,

Mike Huckabee
